At least a few times a week, someone will walk into Rough & Tumble for the first time and just cry a little bit, says owner Jen Barnes. She thinks it’s partially because of the space itself — it’s big and airy and beautiful — but also because of what it represents.

Across town, Barnes will be queueing up the Kraken game on that 120-inch main screen in honor of the LGBTQ+ celebration. She highlights access to women's sports but says "we play everything here" so fans can watch a variety of games on her pub's screens during a busy sports season.

Nearly 100 people watched the 2023 NWSL Draft from Rough & Tumble, including OL Reign draftee Shae Holmes and her family. The following week, a sold-out crowd of over 200 watched the USWNT friendlies, with others queuing down the block in hopes of squeezing in.

But at Rough & Tumble, the priority is Women’s sports — Seattle Storm, OL Reign, and women’s collegiate athletics.

Rough & Tumble’s name is an homage to the Dick, Kerr Ladies FC, who were banned from playing soccer in the early 1900s in England and called “Rough Girls” as a pejorative for doing so anyway.
